Planting A Native Woodland Or Small Copse
Come to Wildacres Nature Reserve for a rewarding experience and informative workshop on Planting your own Woodland or small Copse.
In the relaxed stress-free atmosphere and the nature filled setting of Wildacres, learn what you can do in your outdoor space, whether you have a garden or acres of land.
There are few things to match the sense of satisfaction and contentment as you watch your native trees grow year on year knowing you are doing your bit to help climate change and biodiversity loss.
Isn’t it fascinating to think with the likes of our Native Oak, that given the right location it could live for upwards of 800 years! and it supports over 284 different insect species!
The workshop will include an indoor seated visual presentation in The Big Green Barn followed by an engaging guided tour of specific areas within the nature reserve including the native woodland, native hedgerow and Tree Nursery. There will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A.
Topics covered will include:
- The different species of native trees you can plant and the soil types and conditions they are suited to.
- How to get started, prepare the area for planting, source your trees and proceed to plant the woodland or small copse.
- The varying habitats you can create within a woodland and the plant and animal species found in such habitats.
- How to manage your trees in the first, and successive years.
- How you can harvest your own native tree seed.
Workshop includes a refreshment break for a Cuppa and Wildacres Honey Oat Cookies seated overlooking the ¾ acre wildlife pond.
You will also receive a gift of a young native willow tree (a tree which supports a significant amount of native Irish Wildlife).
Duration: 2.5 hours
