Creating A Wildflower Meadow

Come to Wildacres Nature Reserve for an enjoyable workshop and learn all about creating your own Wildflower Patch or Meadow.

In a relaxed atmosphere, explore what you can do in your outdoor space, whether that is a small courtyard filled with pots, a back garden or a few acres or more.

What could be more relaxing than to sit out on a sunny day and watch Butterflies and Bumblebees fluttering and buzzing from flower to flower in your very own wildflower patch or meadow. Watch it change through the seasons and marvel at the wildlife it attracts.

The workshop will include an indoor seated visual presentation in The Big Green Barn followed by an engaging guided tour of specific areas within the nature reserve including the wildflower meadow, pollinator beds and butterfly border and the polytunnel where we operate a wildflower nursery.

Topics covered will include:

  • The different types of Wildflower meadows / patches you can create in your outdoor space.
  • The various species of native Wildflower and the different soil types that they are suited to.
  • How to get started, prepare the area for planting and proceed to plant the meadow/patch.
  • How to manage the meadow/patch in the first and successive years.
  • The array of different species of wildlife that you can expect to see.
  • How you can harvest your own wildflower seed.

Workshop includes a refreshment break for a Cuppa and Wildacres Honey Oat Cookies seated overlooking the ¾ acre wildlife pond.

You will also receive a gift of a packet of native wildflower seed.

Duration: 2.5 hours

Group Size: 10-14

Price: €65*

Age: 16+ years (must be accompanied by an adult)

Weather: Please dress for the great outdoors and Irish weather.

Suitability: Wellies recommended, some rough ground.
