Introduction To Beekeeping

Come to Wildacres Nature Reserve and Honey Farm and learn all about the ancient wonderous craft of Beekeeping from Brian the Beekeeper, in a relaxing, friendly environment in these beautiful surroundings. Sustainability is at the heart of Honey production on Wildacres.

The introductory course will be a mixture of engaging visual presentation in The Big Green Barn and the unique opportunity to visit the apiary to see the hives.

The course will include a break for refreshments and lunch seated looking out over the main wildlife pond, surrounded by calmness and nature and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Topics covered will include:

  • The Anatomy of the Native Irish Honey Bee.
  • Structure and working of the Beehive.
  • Managing a Honeybee colony through the various seasons.
  • How to extract, prepare, and jar up delicious raw local Irish honey.
  • Other produce that can harvested from a Beehive such as beeswax and propolis.

Also experience

  • A visit to the Wildacres Apiary, in a full Bee suit and experience up close the inside of a live working honeybee hive.
  • A walk to see and learn about the native plants that our bees rely on to produce our
    wonderful raw Irish honey and the importance of ensuring there is enough forage for other
    pollinators.
  • A fascinating tasting session of the different types of Honey produced at Wildacres such as Wildflower Summer Honey, Ivy Honey and the much lauded and sought-after Heather
    Honey.

On the day you can purchase Wildacres Raw Honey and Beeswax candles and sign up to Wildacres Hive Sharing.

Duration: 10am – 3.30pm (Break and picnic lunch included) *

Age: 18+ years

Weather: Please dress for the great outdoors and Irish weather.

Suitability: Wellies essential.
